Quiet Moments

I love spending time with family--especially my husband and my puppy. It is in the quiet moments that I spend with them that I find joy!

Quiet Moments

Mynnette Kitchen 2-28-2011
Sitting in a group
Huddled on our couch
Leaning into each other
Speaking in hushed tones
Love is spoken in quiet gentle words
And service is our creed
Our family is eternal
And we have hope in that promise

What We Believe Series Poetry

Just FYI for anyone reading my blog, I have decided that each Sunday I will do a "What We Believe" series poem. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we have a Youtube channel. I will be taking a movie from that site and writing a poem to go along with it. I hope you are inspired and uplifted by all that you read here, but especially each Sabbath Day.

He Will Give You Help (What We Believe Series)

He Will Give You Help
Mynnette Kitchen 2-27-2011

Our Savior lived and died for us,
A life of selfless sacrifice.
Through Him all mankind can be saved,
He conquered even our earthly grave.
The love and hope that from Christ we feel
Is strong enough, our wounds it heals.
Come unto Christ and live anew,
His words, His deeds to humbly do.

Listen

I love Haikus. I know they're supposed to be about nature...but not all of mine are. Here's an example:

Listen to me now.

You know how I feel, don't you?
How could you not know.

Chaos

Does your life EVER feel chaotic?! Mine has the past few weeks. I try to keep things uplifting, but it's been really hard the past month. I wonder if it's because February is a short month...anyway, here's a poem that expresses my feelings of chaos.

Chaos
Mynnette Kitchen 2-22-2011

Nothing seems to be going

exactly as it should.
My life just isn't becoming
what I think it could.
I try my hardest to be perfect,
but that is NOT how it goes.
Why do I try?!

Nothing ever turn out!

But not everything does.
LEARN TO COPE.

Relief Society (What We Believe Series)

Relief Society is my church's women group. It was organized on March 17, 1842. All women ages 18 and up attend this class each week and we have monthly meetings as well. Our motto is "Charity never faileth" and we were organized on principle of faith and service. I am grateful to be a part of the Relief Society and so I was wanting to write a poem about it. Since I couldn't find the right words, I found one by somebody else.

Relief Society
Long a go in Nauvoo twenty sisters sat.
Side by side a rainbow of difference.
From the newest rose bud,
To the full mature bloom of womanhood.
Knitted together in faith, harmonised in aim.
They were sisters.
We too are known and loved by the same Father.
Striving to build the kingdom one family, one home at a time.
Much strength is drawn from our sisterhood.
Our sister stumbles as we have,
We reach to lift and steady her.
Tired and weary, yet not alone,
the courage, commitment and testimony of our sisters spurs us on.
Our Father's work to do.
Behold the handmaids of the Lord
We are his hands and through us
Charity never faileth.

Favorite Poetry Spotlight

This is a poem that I was made aware of in high school and I love it. I feel that this perfectly matches how I feel. We shouldn't judge others because we never know what they may be going through. We only see their mask.

We Wear the Mask
Paul Laurence Dunbar

WE wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

Joy

I think that we all struggle at some point in our lives with finding joy. There are many things that seem like stumbling blocks to our journey for joy, but I do know that no matter our situation and no matter what trials come our way, our Father in Heaven wants us to be joyful! Joy is a choice. I choose joy.

Joy!

Mynnette Kitchen 2-12-2011

Life can be tough,
At times it's definitely NOT a piece of cake.
What do you choose to make of it?
There are two paths to follow:
Joy or misery.
I choose joy.

Is it easy?
NO WAY.
Is it worth it?

DEFINITELY.

Changes

It seems that lately there have been many changes in my life. It's never easy to change, even if it's something expected or even something good. So, this poem is dedicated to change. :)

Changes

Mynnette Kitchen 2-11-2011

Comfortable

Easy
Familiar

Can turn to
Scary
Hard
Unknown
In an instant.

Happy
Excited
Inspired
Is better than
Angry
Bitter
Defiant
When changes come around.

Something Important

I think that sometimes we forget how much we matter. This world is very good about making us feel inferior if we do not have the latest clothing or the most friends or the most money. We are all so much more than that!

Something Important
Mynnette Kitchen 2-10-2011

How can you decide if you're important?
Is it by the number of friends you have
Or by the amount of money you've acquired?

I think that any worth we have
Is not measured in anything tangible.
It is measured by the love we feel
From a wonderful Heavenly Father.
We are worth more than all the popularity

And all the money in the world.

We are ALL something important.

First Post

I am excited to announce my new poetry blog. :) Poetry is something that I have used over the years to express myself. This blog will be my writing and also commentary on poetry that has touched my life. I've decided to start this blog with a poem that I spontaneously wrote right now :)

Hearts

Mynnette Kitchen 2-9-2011

Two hearts as one
Beating in time
.
Yours is mine;
Mine is yours.
Eternity has arrived.

Since it's Valentine's Day in less than a week, I wanted to write something that reminded me of when my husband and I became engaged. :) Hope you LOVE it. Happy Heart Day!
